Research - The Gallery Calendar - Self-led Brief

I began by thinking about the art institutions that I wanted to represent in the 2019 version of this calendar. I thought that it would be useful for me to pick 12 institutions I admire or have previously visited, meaning that I will have prior knowledge of their architecture, aesthetic and work.

12 Galleries to be feature:
  • January - The Hepworth Wakefield (Wakefield)
  • February - The Herbert Art Gallery & Museum (Coventry)
  • March - Tate Modern (London)
  • April -Ikon Gallery (Birmingham)
  • May - The Victoria and Albert Museum (London)
  • June - Brighton Museum & Art Gallery (Brighton)
  • July - Tate St Ives (St Ives)
  • August -Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery (Birmingham)
  • September - The Sainsbury Center for Visual Arts (Norwich)
  • November - Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art (Edinburgh)
  • December - Barber Institute of Fine Arts (Birmingham)
I then began thinking about ways I could visually represent each of these galleries -
  • An illustration of the building
  • The building made up of basic overlapping shapes or stencils
  • An illustration of one of their permanent collection
  • A particular pattern or aesthetic
  • An illustration of a person visiting the place
  • An image or photograph of the place itself
  • An illustration of the origin of the gallery - when it was first made, what happened - it being built?
  • Purely type based - a very experimental type, how this could be used large scale, overlapping to create an interesting effect. Or could there be use if imagery too?
  • No image - could the date section be large and extensive, filling the entire page
  • A pinpoint of that location on an interestingly developed map
After this I began researching other contemporary calendars and the techniques these used.
