A meeting was conducted with the illustrator and we discussed the different elements we'd like to cover in 'The Vagina Guide' and how Hope's illustrations would work with this. I looked at her previous illustrations and began thinking about the type of aesthetic which would match this. The designs are digital illustrated and are clean, contemporary and modern. They show a particular focus for reds, pinks and yellows and the guide design will share a similar aesthetic. The designs are stylised but they are also very life-like, which is important because the Vagina guide needs to be informative and educational. The guide needs to strike a good balance between quirky and realistic, just as these illustrations do.
After showing her the text I put together we began organising what she would illustrate, this included:
- Pictures of masturbation techniques.
- Orgasm metaphor images.
- A fountain illustration.
- Two people having sex.
The guide contains a lot more content than this, so it will be important to spread the illustrations out sporadically across the publication. There will be other ways to include visuals throughout the guide - considering methods of altering type, changing stock and more anatomical images.
Hope then sent over the first few initial illustrations, which meant I had a better idea of the aesthetic I will be visually representing. We discussed using a variety of colours - not just pink and red as the guide will be about acceptance and diversity - not just the typical feminine aesthetic.
