For the part divides the author requested that I do some lino prints, in keeping with the traditional, black and white nature of the story. So after reading the story, I created a sketch to represent each of the 4 parts of the novel: the Tippler factory logo, the crushed snails, a binary exorcism and the door into shadow. Using these sketches I carefully transferred the designs to be lino cut.
Once the designs were cut into lino, quite a few variations were created, meaning that the best quality prints could be used scanned, edited and used for the book.
The best quality designs were the ones with the boldest colour and finer detail. None of them were quite perfect, with several markings, however the imperfect nature of the designs really give a feel for the content of the story. The story is full of horrors and spirits and this imperfect edge really adds to the sinister feeling of the book. It also links to traditional, old fashioned storytelling, which was my primary intention.
