Initial Experiments - The Door into Shadow - Live Brief

I began by doing several different illustrations, experimenting with bright, burnt colours - reflecting the tone of the story and an older style of book cover. However, these felt too flat on the page, although with development could be far more effecting.

I then went on to try some experimentation with brightly coloured card. These could have perhaps been better if they were photographed and then edited to be brighter and more striking. However, the designs themselves felt a bit too childish given the darker themes of the story. Although this could have made a 'nice' uncomfortable juxtaposition, I decided to try a darker monochrome collage.

This collage was designed to be inverted to create more a striking, sinister style of illustration. The purple crayon effect is used for the light flowing from the door, linking to the more innocent themes of the story. David is young in the beginning scene where his brother is killed and a path drawn as if in crayon reflects this. It was drawn in purple as this inverted created an interesting yellow tone. The collage was experimented with, accompanying apostles, a sheen of grey over the door and some toned wire around the archway - to reference the trees mentioned in the novel. However the trees complicated the scene so were left to the more bold apostle line.

Once inverted the desired effect was achieved, something very classical and striking. Then it was a case of choosing a typeface and layout to reflect the same 'classic novel' style.
