Business Cards Production - Laptop Cat Publishing Logo - Live Brief

In order to get the best possible quality for the business cards, I did several print experiments. This way issues with stock could be avoided and the client could decided which finish he preferred.

Tabriz Blue GFSmith 270gsm

The Tabriz Blue stock had high impact and meant that the black designs popped from the page. The texture of the paper is a good quality and allows a very tactile experience - it has the same 'roughness' as the paper used for books - which makes a good link to the type of business. Having several different patterns is also a nice layer to the cards - meaning that they make a set when placed together - the client was especially pleased with this. With the back of the design the cat's head is slightly textured, due to the large block colour and the absorbancy of the stock, yet this adds to the design and gives it a professional 'warn' feel.

White Matte Card 270 gsm

This collection of cards was more professional than the previous set, but also not as quirky. The white contrasts well with the blue and emphasises the logo in the center of the page. Printing the blue colour means there is slight issues with consistency due to the laser printing process, which is not a problem with the previous designs made on blue card. However, the contrasting white on the backs of the business cards means that the details of the author stand out; whereas on the blue they are more muted. The 'fold' design has also come out quite well, with half the cat in a shadowy grey. Yet this 3D style combined with the shocking white is perhaps too modern and digital for a publishing house - which relies on the analogue experience of reading.

Recycled Matte Stock - 270 gsm

When trying out the Recycled Matte, there were several issues in the printing process. The grey and the black were difficult to differentiate and the black became a lot more textured and faded due to the absorbancy of the stock. However, this faded texture which is most prominent on the backs of the business cards, gives almost a 'hand printed' effect. This gives the cards a traditional and classic feeling, trumping the overly modern feeling of the previous set and balancing the modern style logo. Especially as the recycled stock has a creamier colour, instead of white, which immediately has connotations to the creamy colour of book pages.
