Pan McMillan Storybook - Initial Ideas

Initially we knew we wanted to do a story about the Yorkshire Moors, having visited there before and been inspired by the imagery. We began thinking about the kind of style book we wanted to do and one of our first thoughts was to do a collaged composition - since we both have had experience in this before.

Potential plot themes/ story morals:
  • The importance of family/loyalty/helping each other.
  • Courage and respect - the main character realises he needs to respect his surroundings and his sisters.
  • The importance of imagination - children can learn how things can be exciting by just imaging things - which is something that is less acknowledged in this technology driven age.
Character Ideas:

We wanted to have two sisters and one brother, the sisters would be slightly older and the focus of the book would be on them telling stories to their brother to entertain him.
  • Mabel, age 12 - the oldest, the most in control, shepherds the other two.
  • Heather, age 9 - the middle child, loyal to Mabel, starts the 'imagine' theme.
  • Louie, age 5 - the smallest, the focus, adventurous, boisterous, curious, thinks he's an explorer, careless, cares for his sisters nevertheless.
  • The Sailor - Appears randomly in the story, an elderly man who slightly resembles someone with sailor clothing, saves Louie.
  • Grandma - Appears at the end of the story, is 'end-goal', and an embodiment of security.
