Pan Macmillan Storybook - I Will Not Ever Never Eat a Tomato Charlie and Lola Book

For some of our research we looked at the children's book series Charlie and Lola. The book series, illustrated and written by Laura Child, uses a style that we were particularly interested in. The style is very based on textures and appears 'rough' and collaged spontaneously. Despite this is still seems considered and consistent, the style is unique and distinctive. I hope to develop a similarly iconic style for creating the characters, which is my job.

The angles are from alternative angles which really adds to the flow of the book. I also particularly like the way Child has incorporated a visual for the blurb which is out of the ordinary. The uneven plate seems kitsch, yet it works well and appears incredibly child friendly.

The way the book has been typeset is particularly interesting, it never follows a straight line which is something we need to consider, and sometimes its takes an an incredibly experimental approach. For example the peas raining down from the sky makes the type interlock with the composition well. There is something slightly David Carson about this style and he might be an interesting person to research later on for type layout ideas.
