Pan Macmillan Storybook - Texture Creation

Once having been to the moor, it became important to create textures for the book, inspired by the scenes we'd seen. To do my textures I used printing ink, liquid ink, watercolour, objects like foil, wax crayons and marker pens.We wanted to create textures that would truly reflect the different aspects of the moor, whilst still being consistent and subtle enough not to detract from the characters.

Watercolour, could be used as clothing for colour spike.
Screwed paper and ink experiment.
Doyle experiment
Glass bottle experiment - too uniform to reflect wildness of moor
Marker pen style - not consistent?
Screwed paper and red watercolour experiment - natural veins.
Crushed foil prints - looks like flowers/bushels
Spread ink - has a wildness, like a looming cloud.
The paint brush marks show the bits of leaf hidden under paper.
Scraps brushed across the page, appearing rough and brash.
One of the most successful, showing interesting variant in weight.
Experiment with red watercolour, smudginess works to seem softer.
Prints of plastic toy, creating something of natural appearance. Too uniform?
