The style I developed reminded me of the characters in David Lucas's Nutmeg, which were unusual and simplistic, yet had a uniqueness that carried through the story. The simple hand drawn shapes seem soft and childlike, yet there are also sharper edges for things like the hair and clothes which work well in tandem. Something I also found interesting was the use of shading created by lines, implying shadow, this was something I experimented with later.
The story is profound and melancholy, the scene are dark and often show sparse beaches and dumps. The is a sadness that comes throughout the story and the loneliness of the main character. This is an example of the depth that the judges are looking for and a great way of respecting a child audience, as Laura Carlin has said. Although our story has no plan to be sad, it will still be important to give the characters depth and meaning - they need to exist outside of the story.
