Grid Experimentation

Initially I began to think about using a grid that would follow a typical photograph composition, so the rule of thirds or the Phi grid. However following the idea of having each page as 4" by 6" this doesn't leave much guidance for where the text will be. Unless the text was confined to a certain square within each image. For this concept to work though it would be necessary to include another margin guideline so the text would be going right up to the edge of each page.

I then did some research into different grid ideas, specifically modernist work as this had been something mentioned in a critique. This was in 'Layout Essentials: 100 Designs Principles' by Beth Tondreau and 'Book Design' by Andrew Haslam. The ones I found tended to be very detailed which probably won't work for something with such small dimensions. However it did give me some inspiration for ways I could divide the page up. The most important thing at the moment is for the pictures to be as large as possible so each can be scrutinized for that particular camera's merit.

Modernist grid principles, simple/functional.
Could the images be shown simply,
in a small section of the page?
Could the text be on separate spreads to the images
in order to have full legibility and simplicity.
The images could be full bleed with a small
section of white below in order to title the image
 and indicate the page number.
After this I did some rough sketches of layouts I could develop. I eventually went with a layout that corresponded with the designs, rather than the designing having to fit a predetermined grid. This involved many guides in order for the design to be consistent on each page.
