'1000' Fonts by Bob Gordon

After having many fonts suggested in the critique I decided to research a few in order to gain some inspiration. I did this using '1000' Fonts by Bob Gordon.

I was originally using 'Calibri' which was an awful choice of font to begin with. It is unremarkable and quite plain. I also see it as 'soft' which is the opposite of the clinical effect I wanted to achieve. It is also extensively used by Microsoft and has no real links to the content of Amateur Analog.

Next I looked at Helvetica which had been suggested so many times in the critiques. This does have more of an effective aesthetic and has been extensively used in blueprints, which is similar to the technical drawings I have designed. However, Helvetica has, as a result, been used SO many times - it is quite a typical response and is something I would rather avoid.

The best typeface I looked at was Franklin Gothic, which is continually classic and bold. This is something similar to the typefaces used by camera brands too and was used heavily used during the 50s (which was an original focus for the guide.) Specifically I used this mainly in italics because of the specialist feel it creates.

This was rearranged and processed many times, it had to particularly work well as annotated lines drawing from diagrams. Something I changed immediately was the leading to 9pt, which meant if a line carried on underneath it was concise and compact. I also need to design numbers in the same typeface, these were thickened and trialed with several different colours for legibility. It was important to get the spacing between each line equal too so that was something I ensured with guides.
